Writing your own wedding vows? Confused where to begin?

Look no further! With our comprehensive guide on how to write the perfect wedding vows, you can prepare a love note like no other.

Step 1: Do Your Research

Before you sit down and put pen to paper, you need to begin forming some kind of ideas, and the easiest way to get started on a project so momentous, is really simple – through research!

First and foremost, have a little look at what other people have compiled. There is a wealth of examples available on the internet, and whilst we are absolutely not recommending copying someone else’s vows word for word, a little inspiration can be a very healthy place to get you started.

Furthermore, a bit of research into your spouse can also go a long way! Perhaps your spouse likes a particular poem? Or even a particular song with beautiful lyrics that mean something to you both…

Consider what quotes and phrases you have found throughout your life that are really, truly beautiful, and pop them into your notes. You will need them later!

Step 2: Sit Down Alone

Whether you choose to settle at the dining room table, in your car parked up somewhere peaceful or in a quiet corner of a coffee shop, make sure that you unplug from the world.

Find a suitable time to be alone with your own thoughts, and begin preparing some of the most heartfelt, meaningful and potentially beautiful words that you will ever say to another human being.

I know what you’re thinking – pressure! But do not worry! Once you get started, these things tend to carry themselves away, and if you’re able to think clearly, with no distractions, who knows what the possibilities are.

Step 3: Plan, Plan, Plan

If you’re well and truly lost when it comes to writing your vows, and you need a good sense of what order to place things, try and remember what vows are all about – your promise (or vow) to your betrothed on what your shared life together will be like.

Think about what you actually want from your marriage together. Think about what you would like to hear from your partner.

If you must, take inspiration from the traditional wedding vows; to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer…if you can put together a clear list of what it is that you wish to provide in your marriage, the tricky part is done!

Step 4: Give Yourself Enough Time

Contrary to your initial thoughts, once you actually get down to writing your vows you may begin to find the task slightly more difficult than initially anticipated.

This is because at the end of the day, you do not want to let your other half down. With everyone waiting for this precious moment, the pressure can certainly be on, and you need to make sure that they are perfect and practised before stepping foot on the aisle.

With this in mind, make sure that you award yourself enough time to actually write them!

Passing the task off as trivial could reap massive consequences, and could mean that you read some basic vows copied from another bride or groom that has no real meaning to your future spouse.

Moreover, your lovely bride or groom could have spent some serious time preparing a really authentic and unique set of vows for you. How will you feel knowing in your heart that you have not reciprocated such a simple gesture? Certainly not a good place to begin a life of wedded bliss.
